Bach Series: Sheet Music Recommendations for the Flute

Hi everyone,

In today's post I'm going to talk about a selection of Bach book & sheet music for the flute. The reason why I'm doing this is because this was quite a tricky one for me to navigate as a flute learner, and its only from researching the internet that I've been able to find these books of sheet music for the flute.

The Well Tempered Flutist 101 Pieces for Solo Flute (Carl Fischer)
This is a brilliant book to have, especially for anyone whose interested in getting in learning Bach and the Baroque era of music. This book contains 101 pieces of Bach's most well known works, and they have all been transposed for you to learn and enjoy on the flute. It contains pieces from Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, pieces written for the flute, quartets, and a range of other pieces.

The Chaconne for Solo Flute by Denis Bouriakov & William Bennett (Presser)
Bach's famous Chaconne from his D Minor Suite originally written for solo violin has now been transposed for solo flute by Denis Bouriakov & William Bennett. It features both of the movements of the Chaconne. It's worth a listen to Denis Bouriakov's version, so then you can have an understanding on what this piece sounds like on the flute. I also had to use a version by Hilary Hahn, so then I could understand exactly what is that I'm supposed to be doing.

Toccata & Fugue in D Minor BWV565 for Solo Flute arranged by Jean-Claude Veilhan
One of Bach's most famous pieces that was originally written for the Organ, and this has been transposed for numerous instruments over the years by different composers. Even though this has been transposed for the flute, it hasn't lost any of its beauty. It's still tricky on the flute, as you still have to figure out how to play the multiple voices on the flute.

Overture in B Minor (Barenreiter)
The Overture in B Minor in this addition has been written for flute with piano accompaniment, and it features the well known piece 'Badinerie'.

Partita in A Minor for Solo Flute (Barenreiter/ Henle)
The Partita in A Minor features the well known 'Allemande'. The 'Allemande' was a form of dance during the Baroque era.

I've also got to mention Bach's flute sonatas, but because I'm not familiar with them I'm just going to list the additions I have in my collection.

- Flute Sonata in C Major (Barenreiter)
- Four Flute Sonatas BWV 1034 - 1035, 1030 & 1032 (Barenreiter)
- Flute Sonatas 1 - The Four Authentic Flute Sonatas (Henle)
- Flute Sonatas 2 - The Three Sonatas attributed to JS Bach (Henle)
